C681 ASL - Land Rover Rapid Intervention Vehicle - Saxon Sandbec
C681 ASL was purchased new in 1985 by the UK pharmaceutical company Glaxochem Ltd as one of two appliances providing cover for its production plant at Montrose in Angus, part of what is now GlaxoSmithKline's primary manufacturing division.
Built by Cheshire based manufacturer Saxon Sanbec to Glaxochem's specification, C681 ASL was a one-off industrial rapid intervention type vehicle (RIV). She was ordered in January 1985 and was delivered in November at a cost of £17,000. The major on-site response vehicle at that time was a 1983 Water Foam Tender built by Mountain Range Ltd on a Bedford Chassis, also now in preservation.
Using the rapid deployment and intervention concept operated by civilian and military airfield fire services, the arrival of C681 ASL as an RIV significantly enhanced the capability of the Company's Wholetime / Retained Site Fire Service. In 2011, the Montrose Site reviewed its emergency response capability and C681 ASL was replaced by an appliance more suitable to current Site operations.
GlaxoSmithKline , Montrose Site has since very generously donated C681 ASL for preservation.
